How Paint Matching Works: Why Getting the Colour Right Matters

Getting the paint colour exactly right is one of the most technically challenging parts of any car repair. Here's how Linwood Coachworks uses the PPG MoonWalk system to guarantee a perfect factory finish every time.

One of the most technically challenging parts of any car body repair is getting the paint colour exactly right. A repair that’s structurally perfect but slightly off in colour is immediately noticeable — and can actually make a vehicle look worse than before it was repaired.

At Linwood Coachworks in Paisley, paint matching is something we take extremely seriously. Here’s how the process works, why it’s more complex than most people realise, and how we ensure a perfect factory finish on every repair.

Why is Paint Matching So Difficult?

You might think that matching a car’s paint colour is as simple as looking up the manufacturer’s colour code. In reality it’s far more complex than that — for several reasons:

  • Paint fades over time — every car’s paint weathers and ages differently depending on how it’s been kept, where it’s been driven, and how much sun exposure it’s had. A brand new tin of the original colour code will often be noticeably brighter than the aged paint on the rest of the vehicle
  • Manufacturer batches vary — even cars of the same colour from the same manufacturer can have subtle variations depending on when they were painted in the factory
  • Metallic and special effect paints are complex — metallic, pearlescent, and colour-shift paints contain microscopic particles that reflect light differently depending on the angle. Getting these to match requires precision mixing and application
  • Paint thickness affects colour — the number of coats applied and the thickness of each coat subtly changes how the colour appears
  • Blending is often required — even a perfect colour match may need to be blended into adjacent panels to create a seamless result

How the PPG MoonWalk System Works

At Linwood Coachworks we use the PPG MoonWalk automated paint mixing system — one of the most advanced paint mixing technologies available in the UK. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Colour Identification

Every vehicle has a manufacturer paint code — usually found on a plate in the door jamb, boot, or under the bonnet. This code identifies the original colour formula. Our system holds an extensive database of manufacturer colour formulas covering virtually every make and model sold in the UK.

Step 2: Spectrophotometer Reading

Rather than relying on the paint code alone, we use a spectrophotometer — a device that measures the exact colour of your vehicle’s existing paint by analysing how it reflects light. This accounts for any fading or variation from the original formula, giving us a precise reading of the actual current colour of your vehicle.

Step 3: Automated Formula Mixing

The PPG MoonWalk system uses this data to automatically calculate and mix the exact formula required — measuring each pigment to a fraction of a gram. This level of precision simply isn’t achievable by hand mixing, which is why automated systems like MoonWalk produce consistently superior results.

Step 4: Test Panel and Adjustment

Before any paint is applied to your vehicle, a test panel is sprayed and checked against the existing paint under different lighting conditions. If any adjustment is needed, the formula is refined until the match is perfect.

Step 5: Application and Blending

Once the colour match is confirmed, the paint is applied in our Junair spray booth — a controlled environment that ensures consistent temperature, humidity and airflow for an even, professional finish. Where necessary, the repaired panel is blended into adjacent panels to create a completely seamless result.

What About Special and Difficult Colours?

Some colours are significantly harder to match than others. The most challenging include:

  • Pearlescent whites — the most common colour on UK roads and one of the hardest to match due to the layered pearl effect
  • Metallic silvers and greys — subtle variations in the metallic particle size and density are very visible in certain light conditions
  • Colour-shift paints — paints that change colour depending on the viewing angle require specialist knowledge and application technique
  • Older vehicles — heavily faded paint on older vehicles requires careful colour adjustment to match the aged finish rather than the original formula

The PPG MoonWalk system handles all of these — and our technicians have the experience to apply them correctly, which is just as important as the mixing accuracy.

Why Does the Spray Booth Matter?

Even a perfectly matched paint formula can produce a poor result if it’s applied in the wrong conditions. Dust, temperature variation, humidity and airflow all affect how paint lays and cures. Our Junair spray booth provides a fully controlled environment with filtered air, regulated temperature and proper extraction — ensuring a consistent, factory-quality finish on every repair.

Will the Repair Be Visible?

When paint matching is done correctly using the right equipment and techniques, a repair should be completely invisible. The colour, finish and texture should match the surrounding panels so precisely that even you won’t be able to tell where the repair was made.

This is what sets a quality bodyshop apart from a cheap quick-fix. Cutting corners on paint matching produces results that are immediately obvious — and can significantly affect your vehicle’s resale value.
