What Is a SMART Repair?
SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. It's a method of repairing localised paint and bodywork damage without removing or respraying an entire panel. A trained technician works on just the affected area — blending the repair seamlessly into the surrounding paintwork so the damage disappears.
SMART repairs are typically used for:
- Minor scuffs and scratches that haven't broken through to bare metal
- Small dents without paint damage
- Stone chips and minor paint chips
- Kerbing damage to bumper corners
- Light surface marks on panels
When the damage is genuinely minor and confined to a small area, a SMART repair is a fast, cost-effective solution that delivers excellent results. A good SMART repair is undetectable to the naked eye.
What Is a Full Bodyshop Repair?
A full bodyshop repair involves more extensive work on a panel or multiple panels. Rather than treating just the damaged area, a bodyshop repair may involve panel replacement, structural work, or a full panel respray to restore the vehicle to pre-accident condition.
Full bodyshop repairs are required for:
- Damage that has broken through the paint layers to the primer or bare metal
- Dents that have caused paint cracking or creasing
- Collision damage affecting the structure or shape of a panel
- Damage covering a large area of a panel
- Repairs that need to be completed to BS10125 insurance standard
The Most Common Mistake Drivers Make
One of the most common situations we see at Linwood Coachworks is a driver coming in convinced they have a minor scratch, when the damage has actually gone much deeper than it looks.
Paint isn't a single layer. A typical vehicle has a primer coat, a base colour coat and a clear lacquer coat on top. A scratch that looks superficial on the surface can easily break through all three layers — and once it reaches bare metal, you have a problem. Exposed metal will begin to oxidise, and if left untreated, rust can spread beneath the surrounding paintwork long before it becomes visible.
This is why a proper assessment matters. What looks like a job for a SMART repair can turn out to need full panel treatment once a trained eye has looked at it properly. Equally, what a driver assumes will be expensive can sometimes be resolved with a SMART repair at a fraction of the anticipated cost.
The only reliable way to know which you need is to have the damage assessed by a qualified technician.
How to Tell Which You Might Need
While a professional assessment is always the right approach, there are some indicators that can give you a rough idea before you bring your vehicle in.
A SMART repair may be suitable if:
- The scratch feels smooth when you run your fingernail across it and doesn't catch
- The damage is confined to a small area and hasn't cracked or creased the panel
- The colour of the paint is still visible in the damaged area with no silver or grey showing through
- There is no denting or deformation of the panel itself
A full bodyshop repair is more likely if:
- Your fingernail catches on the scratch, indicating it has broken through the paint layers
- You can see silver, grey or bare metal in the damaged area
- The panel is dented, creased or deformed
- The damage covers a large area or spans across panel edges
- The repair is part of an insurance claim requiring BS10125 standard work
Does It Matter for Insurance Claims?
Yes — and this is an important point. If your repair is being carried out as part of an insurance claim, the work must meet BS10125 standard regardless of the size of the damage. SMART repairs, while effective for cosmetic work, are not always appropriate for insurance-standard repairs where structural integrity and finish quality need to be formally certified.
At Linwood Coachworks we are fully BS10125 accredited. When we carry out repair work on an insurance claim, everything is done to that standard — which means your vehicle is restored properly, not just made to look right on the surface.
If you're unsure whether your damage should go through insurance or be paid privately, our team can advise you at the assessment stage. In non-fault situations especially, it's often worth going through insurance — and we handle all of that directly with your insurer on your behalf.
What About My Specific Vehicle?
The make, model, age and paint type of your vehicle all affect which repair method is most appropriate — and the cost involved. Metallic, pearlescent and specialist finishes require different treatment to standard solid colours. Older vehicles with faded paintwork present different challenges to newer cars. Prestige marques often have thicker lacquer coats that respond differently to SMART repair techniques.
This is why we don't give blanket pricing or advice without seeing the vehicle. Every job is assessed individually, and we'll always recommend the most appropriate — and most cost-effective — solution for your specific situation.
