Do You Have to Use Your Insurer’s Approved Repairer?

After an accident, one of the first things your insurer will do is point you toward their approved repairer. It can feel like that's the only option — but it isn't. You have the legal right to choose who repairs your vehicle, and it's a right worth using.

Here's what you need to know before you make that decision.

What is an approved repairer?

Approved repairers are bodyshops that have a commercial agreement with your insurance company. The insurer sends them a steady stream of work; in return, the bodyshop agrees to repair vehicles at a rate the insurer sets — not the rate the bodyshop would normally charge.

This arrangement works well for the insurer. It keeps repair costs predictable and controlled. Whether it works as well for you is a different question.

Do you have to use them?

No. Under UK law, you have the right to choose your own repairer. Your insurer cannot force you to use their approved network, and they cannot refuse to pay a valid claim simply because you chose an independent bodyshop.

They may tell you that using their approved repairer is "easier" or that they can only "guarantee" work done through their network. This is common — but it is not the same as saying you have no choice.

What are the differences in practice?

Quality of repair

Approved repairers work to volume. They process a high number of vehicles at rates set by the insurer, which can create pressure to complete jobs quickly and cheaply. An independent bodyshop like Linwood Coachworks works to BS10125 — the British Standard for vehicle body repair — and signs off every job individually before you collect your car.

Who controls the process

When you use an approved repairer, the insurer manages the repair on their terms. When you choose your own bodyshop, you have a direct relationship with the people doing the work. You can ask questions, see progress, and know exactly what's happening to your vehicle.

Parts used

Approved repairers are sometimes authorised to use non-original parts to keep costs down for the insurer. At an independent bodyshop, you can specify the standard you want and discuss parts choices directly.

Turnaround time

This one genuinely varies. Approved repairers often have courtesy car schemes that can move quickly. An independent bodyshop will give you a realistic timescale and stick to it — at Linwood Coachworks we keep every customer updated throughout the repair.

What about the guarantee?

Insurers often say they can only guarantee work done through their approved network. What this usually means is that the insurer will handle any complaints about work done through their repairer directly.

At Linwood Coachworks, all our repairs are guaranteed. If you have any concern after collection, you come back to us and we sort it — no back-and-forth with a third party required.

What if the accident wasn't your fault?

If you weren't at fault, you may not need to go through your own insurer at all. Through accident management, the cost of repairing your vehicle — including a replacement car while yours is off the road — can be recovered directly from the at-fault driver's insurer.

That means no excess to pay, no impact on your no-claims bonus, and no pressure to use anyone's approved repairer. You choose where your car is repaired, and the other party's insurer picks up the bill.

We handle this entire process for our customers. Find out more about our accident management service.

What if I'm going through my own insurer?

If the accident was your fault, or if you choose to go through your own policy, you can still choose your repairer. Let your insurer know upfront that you want to use Linwood Coachworks. We're BS10125 accredited and work directly with all major insurers — so this is a straightforward conversation in most cases.

Your insurer will assess the damage and authorise the repair. We handle everything from that point.

The bottom line

Your insurer has a financial interest in where your car is repaired. That doesn't mean their approved repairer is the wrong choice — but it does mean you should make an informed decision rather than defaulting to whoever your insurer recommends.

You have the right to choose. Use it.
