What Is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)? A Complete Guide

If you've picked up a car park dent, a door ding, or a shallow crease and started researching how to fix it, you've probably come across the term "paintless dent repair," or PDR. Paintless dent repair is a technique for removing dents without filling, sanding, or repainting the panel, the technician works the metal back into shape from behind or alongside the dent, leaving the original factory paint untouched.

At Linwood Coachworks, we assess every dent to see if it's a PDR job before recommending anything more involved, it's often the faster, cheaper, and better option when the damage allows for it.

How does paintless dent repair work?

Traditional dent repair usually involves filling the dent, sanding it smooth, priming, and repainting the panel to match. PDR skips all of that. Using specialist tools, a technician gently massages the metal back into its original shape from the underside of the panel (or, where access isn't possible, using glue-pull tools from the front). No filler, no paint, no blending required.

Because the original paint is never disturbed, there's no risk of a colour mismatch, and no drying or curing time for fresh paint before the car's ready to collect.

When does PDR work, and when doesn't it?

PDR isn't the right fix for every dent. It works best when:

  • The paint surface is unbroken, no cracking, chipping, or scratching through to bare metal
  • The dent is shallow to medium depth, not sharply creased
  • The metal hasn't been overstretched, which can happen with very sharp impacts
  • There's reasonable access to the back of the panel, or the front, for glue-pull methods

It's not usually suitable when the paint is cracked, the dent is very sharp or deep, or the panel has been stretched beyond the point the metal can spring back. In those cases, a traditional repair, filling, priming, and PPG-matched repainting, is the right call instead. We'll always tell you honestly which category your damage falls into rather than trying to force a PDR fix that won't hold up.

Paintless dent repair vs traditional dent repair

Paintless Dent Repair Traditional Dent Repair
Paint Untouched, original finish Repainted and colour-matched
Speed Usually same day Longer, paint needs to cure
Cost Generally lower Higher, due to materials and labour
Best for Shallow dents, unbroken paint Deep dents, damaged paint, structural work

How long does PDR take?

Most straightforward PDR jobs can be completed the same day, sometimes within an hour or two depending on the size and location of the dent. That's one of the main reasons it's worth asking about before committing to a full repair and respray.

Does PDR affect my car's value?

If anything, PDR helps protect your vehicle's value rather than risk it. Because the factory paint stays intact, there's no repainted panel to show up on a vehicle history check or paint depth reading, which some buyers and dealers do check for.

Frequently asked questions

Is paintless dent repair permanent?
Yes. Once the metal is worked back into shape, the repair is permanent in the same way the original panel was, there's no filler or coating to fail over time.

Can PDR fix hail damage?
Yes, PDR is one of the most common and effective methods for repairing hail damage, since it typically involves multiple shallow dents with the paint surface intact.

Will PDR work on aluminium panels?
It can, though aluminium behaves differently to steel and requires more specialist technique and experience. We'll assess the panel material as part of the estimate.

How much does paintless dent repair cost?
It depends on the size, depth, and location of the dent, but PDR is generally more affordable than a traditional repair since there's no paint or materials involved. We offer free estimates so you know the cost before committing to anything.
