How does paintless dent repair work?
Traditional dent repair usually involves filling the dent, sanding it smooth, priming, and repainting the panel to match. PDR skips all of that. Using specialist tools, a technician gently massages the metal back into its original shape from the underside of the panel (or, where access isn't possible, using glue-pull tools from the front). No filler, no paint, no blending required.
Because the original paint is never disturbed, there's no risk of a colour mismatch, and no drying or curing time for fresh paint before the car's ready to collect.
When does PDR work, and when doesn't it?
PDR isn't the right fix for every dent. It works best when:
- The paint surface is unbroken, no cracking, chipping, or scratching through to bare metal
- The dent is shallow to medium depth, not sharply creased
- The metal hasn't been overstretched, which can happen with very sharp impacts
- There's reasonable access to the back of the panel, or the front, for glue-pull methods
It's not usually suitable when the paint is cracked, the dent is very sharp or deep, or the panel has been stretched beyond the point the metal can spring back. In those cases, a traditional repair, filling, priming, and PPG-matched repainting, is the right call instead.
